The Government of Ghana has pledged to cover the funeral expenses of 15-year-old Ghanaian boy Javits Frimpong, who was fatally shot in the Bronx, New York, while walking to school.

The government has also committed to supporting the teenager’s mother to travel to the United States to attend her son’s funeral and give him a befitting farewell.

The development was disclosed by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a Facebook post reacting to an announcement by New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani.

In a post on X on Saturday, October 31, Mayor Mamdani disclosed that he had spoken with US President Donald Trump, who had agreed to grant Javits Frimpong’s mother a visa immediately to enable her to travel to America for her son’s funeral.

“The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away,” the mayor stated.

He added that Javits’ mother deserved the opportunity to say goodbye to her son in person, noting that the entire city of New York was mourning the tragedy.

The intervention follows growing public concern over the killing of the young Ghanaian, whose death has sparked grief and renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

Javits was reportedly shot dead while on his way to school in the Bronx. His father, Thomas Frimpong, had earlier spoken about the devastating loss, describing his son as his everything.

The government’s decision to support the family is expected to ease some of the financial and logistical difficulties associated with travelling to the United States and organising the teenager’s funeral.

The development also highlights diplomatic engagement between Ghanaian authorities and their American counterparts in responding to the tragedy and ensuring that the bereaved family receives the necessary support.

The opportunity for Javits’ mother to travel to the United States will allow her to be present as family members and loved ones bid farewell to the young Ghanaian.
