The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) celebrates a significant milestone today, marking 75 years since its inception. The association, which has long been the guardian of professional journalism standards in Ghana, continues to enhance the skills and knowledge of journalists through workshops while promoting ethical journalism and accountability among its members.

As the umbrella body for journalists in Ghana, the GJA has been a steadfast advocate for press freedom, actively challenging laws and practices that threaten journalistic independence. The association also provides vital support to journalists facing various challenges in their line of duty.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, the GJA will host a public lecture today, themed “75 Years of Excellence in Journalism: Honouring the Past, Embracing the Present, and Shaping the Future.” The event will pay tribute to trailblazing journalists and former GJA presidents whose contributions have left a lasting impact on journalism in Ghana.

Speaking to newsalertgh.com, the President of the GJA, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, rallied journalists across the country, especially those in the Greater Accra Region and nearby areas, to attend the event in their numbers.

“This is our birthday, and it falls exactly today, August 15, as history has it that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah set up the GJA on this date in 1949.”

The anniversary lecture will be chaired by the Acting Dean of the School of Communication Studies at Wisconsin International University College Ghana. The event will feature the Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar, as the Special Guest, with Omar Faruk Osman, President of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ), serving as the Guest Speaker.

Other speakers include Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, IT Expert and General Manager of External Communication at ECG, and Ethel Cofie, Founder and CEO of EDEL Technology Consulting. The event is expected to draw journalists from across the print, online, and broadcast industries.
