Liverpool confirms tragic passing of Diogo Jota

28-year-old Portuguese forward Diogo Jota has been confirmed dead after his Lamborghini’s tire burst at high speed as the Portuguese forward tried to overtake another car. After the blowout, the sports car veered off the road into a ditch, flipped over, and caught fire. Jota and his brother were burned alive.

The Portuguese star joined Liverpool from English side Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth £45 million, including add ons in September 2020, where he helped the club win the Premier League, the FA Cup and two EFL Cups. He was also part of Liverpool’s team that finished as runner-up in the UCL in the 2020-21 season.

Jota won 49 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 goals. He won two UEFA Nations League titles with Portugal in 2018-19 and 2024-25.

Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

The club have been informed that the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

Liverpool FC will make no further comment at this time and respectfully request that the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff be respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
