President John Dramani Mahama has directed that the bulk of waste being evacuated from Agbogbloshie to the Adepa Engineered Landfill Site near Nsawam be transported at night.
The directive forms part of a 90-day operation to remove an estimated one million tonnes of accumulated waste from the Accra site.
President Mahama said night-time haulage would help protect residents, road users and communities along the route while reducing disruption.
“We must protect the waste, the residents, road users, and the communities along the haulage routes. And that is why we are suggesting that the major haulage must take place at night in accordance with our 24-Hour Economy Initiative,” he said.
“In the daytime, there will be some evacuation of garbage, but on a smaller scale, and then at night we go to full capacity.”
The operation, led by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs with support from the Ghana Armed Forces and DRIP, will involve excavation, loading, transportation and controlled disposal at Adepa.
The 48 Engineers Regiment is providing engineering support, while DRIP equipment including excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders and tipper trucks is being deployed.
President Mahama said the waste clearance forms part of the proposed Agbogbloshie Urban Renewal Project, which includes plans to reclaim the land for an industrial park.
“When we have cleared this garbage, the land that will be reclaimed and recovered is going to be an Industrial Park. We intend to establish a major textile factory here so that they can provide employment to our young people,” he said.
He urged residents of Old Fadama and Agbogbloshie to cooperate with personnel involved in the 90-day exercise.
