Swedish striker Victor Gyokeres has scored 34 goals in the Portuguese Super Liga, making him the player with the most goals in the top 6 European leagues.
The current top 3 European Golden Boot standings:
Mohamed Salah (Egypt) || 27 goals (54 points)
Viktor Einar Gyökeres (Sweden) || 34 goals (51 points)
Robert Lewandowski (Poland) || 25 goals (50 points)
The 26-year-old has been so sensational since his €24M move from English Championship side Coventry City in 2023. €100M release clause was inserted in his contract, making it a difficult task to snatch him from Sporting CP.
He has blossomed into a Grade A striker, and all the credit must be given to young Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim. He was the manager who took him to Portugal when all seemed lost for the young Swedish international.
Former BBC sports broadcast journalist Mark Lawrenson believes Man Utd have already identified their next striker in Gyokeres.
“Man Utd need a striker and I reckon he’ll [Amorim] go for his former player at Sporting, Viktor Gyökeres. I can’t see him going for anyone else, especially as he knows how the striker plays and knows how to get the best out of him.
“The current strikers they’ve got aren’t good enough and I’m sure they’ll look to offload one of them, but some will have to stay. United could let six players leave this summer and bring in six new guys, but then I’m not sure if they can do it from a financial point of view,” Mark Lawrenson said
Manchester United’s major problem has been identified as they lack proper goalscorers. Since Amorim replaced Erik Ten Hag, the club have been struggling to bang in the goals, with forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to step up.
The club has been improving steadily and the connoisseurs believe a proper goalscoring striker can help the Red Devils advance.
The club should expect competition from other giant European clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Juventus and PSG who will all be in the market for a new number 9.
Manchester United are in the semi-finals of the Europa League and will face Spanish side Atletic Bilbao. The success of Manchester United’s season will depend hugely on the Europa League.
