The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) has criticised several reported armed raids by National Security personnel on three district offices of the Forestry Commission in the Ashanti Region, calling these actions “shameful and unlawful.”

In a statement issued on July 29, it was reported that over 15 heavily armed agents entered the Bekwai, Nkawie, and Offinso offices, intimidating staff and disrupting their operations.

GCAG asserts that the actions were meant to intimidate officials engaged in anti-galamsey activities in seven forest reserves.

GCAG has described the incident as a clear misuse of power and is requesting prompt action from President John Dramani Mahama and the appropriate ministers.

The coalition is requesting the prosecution of those involved, the removal of the agents implicated, and the immediate suspension of the Ashanti Regional National Security Coordinator while an independent investigation takes place.

GCAG also expressed concerns about the political appointment of individuals without the necessary technical expertise to the Forestry Commission.

It cautioned that failure to act would significantly harm public confidence in the institutions responsible for safeguarding Ghana’s environment and weaken national efforts against illegal mining.
