Victor Boniface replaced Victor Osimhen in the 87th minute. Nigeria was leading with a lone goal scored by the substituted Osimhen in the 74th minute.

Many Nigerians thought Weic Chele should have brought on a defender to tighten the backline instead of the like-for-like changes he made to chase another goal.

Zimbabwe scored three minutes later when Boniface was introduced to make the score 1-1. The draw has put Nigeria in a very tight corner to steal the sole slot in Group C.

Bafana Bafana has a five-point lead, and a miracle is needed by Nigeria to leapfrog South Africa.

Malian head coach Eric Sekou Chelle, after the game, explained that he wanted another goal for Nigeria, and that was the reason why he did not bring on any defender.

”We could have introduced a defender, but we introduced a striker because I told my boys to try and get another goal.

“We are talking about it because we did not win, but it would not be an issue if we won,” Chelle concluded.

Time is running out for Nigeria, and they must win all four games left to stand any chance of qualifying for the World Cup.
