An investigative committee has found nothing to show that Zakaria Abdulai, the embattled headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), buried a foetus on the school grounds. The claim helped trigger violent unrest on campus in August 2026.
The committee reported that no student or teacher saw the headmaster bury anything.
It also rejected a claim that his vehicle was spotted at the burial site, saying no evidence supported it.
Its inquiry found that the Assistant Headmaster led a team that dug up the remains and reburied them.
The unrest began in the early hours of Wednesday, August 5, when students said they had found a freshly buried baby on campus, then confronted and assaulted the headmaster, who was admitted to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi with multiple injuries. The school was temporarily closed so police could investigate the attack.
The committee said the burial allegation was only part of a wider set of problems at the school. It pointed to weak security, rivalry between groups of staff, gangs among students, and a collapse of trust between the headmaster and sections of the school community.
Reports say the Ghana Education Service (GES) committee also recommended that the headmaster and other staff be posted to other institutions or duty stations. GES headquarters has yet to decide on that recommendation.
The committee’s findings are separate from a fresh investigation into another alleged case of sexual abuse against the headmaster, according to Adom Online.
The GES has suspended Mr Abdulai pending a full investigation, following a directive from the Ministry of Education. The allegation has not been proven, and he is presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
