The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of a Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, whose body was discovered at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast.

The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, 39, was apprehended on Monday, June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team.

According to police, the arrest followed sustained intelligence-led operations aimed at tracking down individuals connected to the student’s death.

Preliminary investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., Mensah allegedly picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave.

Investigators say the suspect, who reportedly claims to be a teacher and also works as a driver, later transported Innocentia to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen alive.

Police disclosed that one of Innocentia’s roommates informed investigators that the student had called to say she was going out to meet an acquaintance.

She reportedly left her room in casual clothing but failed to return, prompting concern among friends and relatives.

The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations.

Police say inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death are ongoing and have assured the public that further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
