A 33-year-old pregnant woman has reportedly died after two teenagers mistook her for a deer and shot her in a farmland at Huniso, near Bogoso in the Western Region.

The deceased, Yaa Karim, is said to have gone into the bush to fetch firewood when the incident happened.

According to reports, the teenagers noticed movement in the bush and opened fire without first confirming what they were aiming at. She was shot twice.

Her sister, Lydia Abanga, says one of the boys is 18 years old, while the other is younger. Because the second suspect is a minor, authorities are withholding his identity.

The two are said to have reported themselves to the Police and are expected to be arraigned once the necessary procedures are completed.

The incident raises fresh concern about the safety of women and other farm workers who enter bushes and farmlands daily to gather firewood, harvest crops or tend their fields, often in areas where hunters are also active.

The Police have yet to comment publicly on the details of the case.
