Probably the most popular abbreviation in world football currently is VAR.

Almost every country is willing to welcome the use of Video Assistant Referees as many deem it to be the solution to the uncountable errors occurring in football.

In Europe, almost every nation uses VAR to regulate its domestic football in a bid to minimise mistakes bedevilling the game. Other parts of the world have welcomed the technology because it is the order of the day in world football.

Sweden has become the first country to refuse to use Video Assistant Referee following a fan revolt against its introduction.

Swedish football fans think VAR has taken a lot of excitement away from their football hence there’s no need to continue destroying their football via the use of VAR.

More than half of the top 32 teams in the Allsvensken and Superettan, the top two tiers of Swedish football, have opposed the use of the technology.

It’s not surprising because VAR has been causing controversies in many high-profile games in many different countries.

However, the use of VAR was 95% effective during the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Only Morocco and Algeria are the countries using VAR in their respective leagues in Africa with Mauritania set to be the third country as preparations are underway for the minnows.
