Three suspects have been arraigned before Circuit Court 7 in Accra over the alleged burglary of former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan’s residence, an incident in which pistols, football medals, watches and jewellery were reportedly carted away.
The accused reportedly attempted to conceal their faces as they were led into the courtroom under tight security. Gyan himself has not been implicated in any wrongdoing and remains a victim in the case rather than a suspect.
Two of the accused, brothers Adams Adder Almeida and Bala Bilyon, face separate and more serious charges tied to the killing of 54-year-old car dealer Mohammed Rahman at Beach Drive Estate, Tuba, near Weija, on August 6.
Police say officers responding to a distress call found Rahman and his wife, 53-year-old Christiana Fosu, lying outside their four-bedroom home with gunshot wounds.
The couple were rushed to Finney Hospital in Weija, where Rahman was pronounced dead on arrival; Fosu was later transferred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where she remains admitted and is said to be responding to treatment.
Investigators say Almeida confessed to shooting the couple, telling police he was provoked after Rahman repeatedly branded him “lazy and useless.”
A pistol recovered from the suspects’ room in Tuba, allegedly hidden beneath a wardrobe belonging to Bilyon, who reportedly worked for and knew the deceased, is believed to be the murder weapon.
Detectives suspect the firearm may be linked to the earlier burglary at Gyan’s home, raising the possibility that a weapon stolen from the footballer’s residence was later used in the fatal Tuba shooting.
Almeida had earlier told investigators the pistol was given to him by an associate identified only as Gideon, whom police say they are still trying to locate to aid the investigation. The case has been adjourned as prosecutors compile the docket for the Attorney-General’s advice.
