North Gonja District: Two suspects arrested over alleged mob lynching at Daboya

Two suspects are in police custody following the alleged mob killing of a young man accused of stealing shea nuts at Daboya in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

The Savannah Regional Police Command identified the detained men as 25-year-old carpenter Adjei Abdulai and 22-year-old student Issah Mahama, both apprehended after investigators combed through evidence tied to the fatal assault.

According to police accounts, the victim, known only as Yibonwura, was set upon by a group of youths who accused him of stealing shea nuts before subjecting him to a severe beating.

He later succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the attack. The gruesome episode was captured on video, which quickly spread across social media platforms and drew widespread public outrage before authorities moved to make arrests.

In a statement dated August 26, Savannah Regional Police Commander DCOP David K. Amoako confirmed that the two suspects had been picked up in connection with the incident and were currently helping detectives piece together the full sequence of events.

Amoako’s statement did not disclose the specific role each suspect allegedly played in the attack, but both remain in custody as the probe continues. A third individual believed to have taken part in the assault has not yet been apprehended, and police say a manhunt has been launched to track down the fugitive and bring him before the courts.

Authorities have pledged to ensure that everyone connected to the killing faces prosecution, as mob violence continues to raise concern in parts of the country where suspected thieves are sometimes attacked by residents before formal justice processes can intervene.

The Daboya case adds to a string of similar incidents that rights advocates and law enforcement officials have repeatedly condemned, warning that such vigilante violence undermines the rule of law and often results in fatalities before the truth of an allegation can even be established.
