Dr Kofi Akamani, a Ghanaian-born professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, has died after a shooting in Jackson County, Illinois.
Authorities said deputies were called to the area of Lake Road, between Murphysboro and Carbondale, at about 5 pm on Saturday.
The 48-year-old was rushed to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale but was later pronounced dead.
Akamani taught forest recreation and conservation social science in SIU Carbondale’s Department of Forestry.
His academic work examined adaptive approaches to governing forest and water resources. In a statement, the university said it was deeply saddened by the loss and offered condolences to his relatives, friends, colleagues and students.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said Akamani’s wife, 35-year-old Betty Akamani, was arrested in relation to the incident and charged with first-degree murder.
Investigators have not disclosed a suspected motive or further information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The investigation is continuing.
