The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested seven suspected armed robbers linked to a series of robbery operations in Zebilla, Garu and Binduri.
The suspects have been identified as Issaka Iddrisu, 20; Ali Tamimu, 21; Akugre Amobila, 26; Banabas Apiiga, 41; Abdul Rashid Adamu, 38; Apiiga Alebena, 21; and Bilala Adabodee, 31.
Police say the arrests followed reports from two victims who identified two of the suspects as part of a three-man armed gang that robbed them at gunpoint and made off with two Yamaha scooter motorbikes valued at GH¢30,000 and GH¢32,000.
The victims said the robbers threatened to kill them if they went to the police.
Under interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted to carrying out the robbery and disclosed that they belong to a wider criminal network that supplies them with weapons for operations across the three towns. They further revealed that the firearm used in the attack had been supplied by a contact in Bawku, who also serves as the group’s arms custodian.
A follow-up search of the homes of three suspects, Abdul Rashid Adamu, Apiiga Alebena and Bilala Adabodee, turned up two unregistered motorbikes, quantities of hard drugs, and GH¢29,550 in cash, believed to be proceeds from their criminal activities.
All seven suspects have since been remanded into police custody by the Bolgatanga Circuit Court and are expected to reappear in court on September 23, 2026.
Police say efforts have been intensified to track down and arrest the alleged weapons supplier believed to be operating out of Bawku.
