A 52-year-old South African national has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg after arriving on a flight from Accra, Ghana, with suspected heroin valued at more than $120,000.
Authorities arrested him on Sunday, September 20, 2026, in an intelligence-led operation jointly conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Border Management Authority (BMA). Officers moved in on the suspect immediately after he disembarked from the Accra flight.
A search of his luggage turned up blocks and bullet-shaped objects packed with substances suspected to be heroin, with a street value estimated at over R2 million, roughly $120,000, or more than GH¢1.4 million.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court to face drug trafficking charges, while investigations continue.
Authorities say the case is not an isolated one. This is the third suspected drug mule intercepted at OR Tambo within three weeks, a pattern that has intensified scrutiny of the airport as a transit point for narcotics syndicates.
Analysts have pointed to South Africa’s geography and porous border infrastructure as factors that make it attractive to trafficking networks, including those linked to West African and Latin American organisations.
The arrest also comes amid heightened concern over Ghana’s role as a transit point in international drug trafficking.
It follows a high-level meeting between President John Mahama and the country’s security chiefs on September 17, 2026, called to review investigations into recent narcotics cases connected to Ghana’s ports.
That scrutiny had already intensified after French customs seized a nearly 3.9-tonne cocaine consignment, worth an estimated €225 million, at the port of Dunkirk on September 10 — concealed in a waste container that had arrived from Ghana.
SAPS says it is investigating whether the suspect has ties to a broader trafficking syndicate.
