The New Edubease Police Service has arrested a 34-year-old woman, namely Helena Oduro, also popularly known as Yaa Ohenewa.

The reports say the childless woman kidnapped the five-year-old KG1 pupil who attends Future Assurance Academy in New Edubiase.

The young girl on March 2nd did not return home from school, forcing her parents to inform the police about her missing.

After days of intense search via social media, radio and TV, the police were informed by good citizens of the whereabouts of the girl.

On May 12, 2025, at Tuobodom in the Bono Region, the little girl was found in the custody of Ohenewaa after a tip-off from neighbours of Ohenewaa.

According to the eyewitnesses, they realised that Helena was maltreating the child whom she had returned with from New Edubiase.

This led them to report her to the police. Together with the father of the child, Opanin Kofi Essah, the police followed up and found the suspect at Tuobodom.

Helena admitted she had attempted to completely change the looks of the girl to keep her. “I tried to undo her braids and shave her hair. I also bleached the girl to appear fairer than her dark complexion,” Ohenewaa said.

Per Opanin Essah, the father of the 5-year-old girl, “Helena was struggling to conceive. She is a neighbour who is a trader in New Edubiase”.

He added, “Ohenewaa empathised with us when we were searching for the child”.
