We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family, loved ones, and all those affected by this tragic loss,” the statement said

The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has started an official investigation into the death of a pregnant woman at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital in response to increasing public concern about the situation.

Ghanaians across social media have been demanding justice for the family of the late Abigail Opoku.

Abigail Opoku has been reported to have passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2026. The situation has received significant attention, with reports stating that she was unable to have a caesarean section because there were no available beds in the recovery ward of the facility.

In response, regional health authorities indicate that an independent committee has been formed to investigate what happened. Officials state that the investigation will examine both clinical choices and systemic factors that might have influenced the result.

The committee includes members from important organisations, such as the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and the Trauma and Specialist Hospital, as well as representatives from the Regional Coordinating Council, the Attorney-General’s Department, and the Regional Health Directorate.

Health officials state that the team has been assigned to conduct a thorough and unbiased review and will provide findings that are expected to guide administrative actions and potential reforms in the system.

Officials have encouraged the public to remain calm as the process continues, emphasising the importance of allowing investigators to carry out their work without outside interference.

The Directorate has restated its dedication to protecting patient well-being and enhancing care standards, especially in maternal health services, as attention increases on the conditions in public health facilities. The Central Regional Director of Health Service, Alberta Adjebeng Biritwum-Nyarko, signed the statement.
