The moment Ghanaian football fans have been waiting for has finally arrived as the Black Stars prepare to begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a crucial Group L clash against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, at BMO Field in Toronto.

After months of qualification battles, squad selections and preparations, Ghana will step onto football’s biggest stage for the fifth time in the nation’s history, carrying the hopes of millions of supporters eager to see the Black Stars make a strong impression at the tournament in North America.

The opening fixture against Panama is widely viewed as one of the most important matches of the group-stage campaign. With football heavyweights England and Croatia also drawn in Group L, securing a positive result against the Central American side could significantly boost Ghana’s chances of progressing to the knockout stages.

Despite anticipation surrounding the team’s return to the World Cup, preparations have not been entirely smooth.

The Black Stars entered the tournament after an uneven build-up that included limited international friendly matches and concerns regarding the fitness levels of some key members of the squad.

The challenges raised questions among supporters and pundits about whether Ghana would have enough time to achieve full match sharpness before the tournament opener. However, the mood inside the camp remains positive, with players and technical staff insisting they are ready for the task ahead.

Leading that optimism is head coach Carlos Queiroz, the experienced tactician who has managed several national teams at the highest level of international football. Having previously guided countries such as Egypt, Iran and Colombia, Queiroz brings a wealth of World Cup and international tournament experience to the Ghana dugout.

Carlos Queiroz

Speaking ahead of the encounter in an interview with Asempa FM, the Portuguese coach expressed confidence in his team’s ability to overcome Panama and begin the competition on a winning note.

According to Queiroz, the challenges faced during preparation have not affected the team’s belief or determination. Instead, he believes the Black Stars possess the quality, character and resilience needed to secure victory when they take to the field.

“We’re strong, and we’re going to make it,” Queiroz declared, sending a message of confidence to Ghanaian supporters both at home and abroad.

His comments reflect the growing belief within the camp that Ghana can compete successfully despite entering one of the tournament’s most demanding groups.

The Black Stars have a rich World Cup history that continues to inspire confidence among supporters. Since making their tournament debut in Germany in 2006, Ghana has produced several memorable moments on football’s grandest stage.

The team’s quarter-final run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa remains one of the greatest achievements by an African nation in the competition’s history.

Although subsequent campaigns in 2014 and 2022 produced mixed results, the Black Stars have consistently demonstrated their ability to challenge some of the world’s strongest football nations. That reputation will once again be tested in a group that includes European giants England and Croatia.

Following the Panama encounter, Ghana will face England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 in what is expected to be one of the most anticipated matches involving an African nation during the group phase. The Black Stars will then conclude their Group L campaign against Croatia on June 27.

With those difficult fixtures still to come, the importance of securing maximum points against Panama cannot be overstated. Victory would provide Ghana with a solid platform from which to challenge for qualification to the next round.

The team has already settled in Toronto and is currently putting the finishing touches on its preparations. Training sessions have focused on tactical organisation, fitness and match readiness as Queiroz and his coaching staff seek to ensure the players are fully prepared for the opening challenge.
