Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has ended months of speculation over his club future, completing a move to Championship side Sheffield United on a one-year contract.
The 34-year-old forward had been without a club since his release from Leicester City at the end of last season, following the Foxes’ relegation to League One.
Ayew’s arrival at Bramall Lane brings the curtain up on the next chapter of a career built almost entirely on English football since 2015, when he first arrived on these shores to sign for Aston Villa from French side Lorient.
He went on to represent Swansea City and enjoyed a productive five-year spell at Crystal Palace, where he was named Player of the Year for the 2019/20 season, before a switch to Leicester City.
Born in Marseille, Ayew is the son of Ghanaian football legend Abedi Pele, who also turned out for Marseille and represented Ghana with distinction.
Before crossing the Channel, the younger Ayew came through the ranks in France, playing for Marseille, Sochaux and Lorient.
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was quick to welcome the experienced attacker, praising his pedigree and versatility across the front line.
Wilder noted that Ayew was leading his country on football’s biggest stage only months ago, and expressed confidence that the striker’s experience would strengthen the Blades’ options as they push for promotion this season.
For Ayew personally, the move ends a period of uncertainty that had persisted since his last competitive outing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he wore the armband and started all four of Ghana’s matches as the Black Stars reached the knockout stage for the first time since 2010.
Reports out of the Ghana camp suggest new head coach Carlos Queiroz is set to include Ayew in his squad for this September’s international break, with the Black Stars facing Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in crucial 2027 AFCON qualifying fixtures.
Despite his lack of competitive club football heading into the window, Queiroz appears ready to lean on Ayew’s leadership and experience as Ghana begins life under its reappointed coach.
With a fresh club home now secured, Ayew will be eager to use his time on the pitch at Sheffield United to sharpen up ahead of Ghana’s qualifying assignments and to continue leading the Black Stars as they chase a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
