Police officer promoted after bravery during Aboso fire rescue

Inspector Hance Atubra has been promoted by Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, after risking his safety to help victims during a fire outbreak at Aboso in the Western Region.

Inspector Atubra, who serves at the Tarkwa Divisional Police Headquarters, has been elevated from the rank of Inspector to Chief Inspector. The promotion recognises his actions during the emergency and his commitment to protecting lives and property.

The fire broke out on 26 August 2026 at the Aboso Main Lorry Station, where several shops were engulfed in flames. The incident caused significant damage to property as the fire spread through the affected area.

Inspector Atubra was the first police officer to arrive at the scene. He immediately began helping people who were trapped in the danger zone, assisting with their evacuation while the blaze continued to develop.

A police statement issued on 28 August said witnesses at the scene had highly commended his response and courage.

“He helped evacuate victims from the danger zone and ensured they were moved to safety as the fire continued to spread.

“His swift response, courage and efforts to save lives and property were highly commended by witnesses at the scene,” the statement said.

Following the incident, a recommendation was submitted for Inspector Atubra’s promotion. The recommendation cited his exceptional bravery and dedication to duty during the fire.

The decision by Christian Tetteh Yohuno formally recognises the officer’s conduct at a time when several shops at the busy station were on fire and people in the area were at risk. His intervention focused on moving victims away from the danger zone as the flames continued to spread.

The promotion places Inspector Atubra in the rank of Chief Inspector and highlights the role he played as the first police officer to reach the scene. No further details about the extent of the property damage or the cause of the fire were provided in the police statement.
