The reigning African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen, has revealed how they are still hurt by the Black Stars’ elimination of the Super Eagles in the playoff for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana qualified on the away goal rule after securing a 1-1 draw in Abuja in the second leg after Nigeria ensured an important 0-0 draw in Kumasi in the first leg.

“We could not have asked for more from our supporters in Abuja that night, he said through Sportstar. They roared us on from the first result to the last. The noise they created was deafening but we let them down and that hurt. Nigerians deserved better”, added Osimhen.

The Napoli striker, 25, has shared his optimism ahead of the 2023 AFCON. He said, “We are capable of winning this tournament because the squad is packed with players who are performing exceptionally well for their European clubs.

“All of us are desperate to make up for failing to reach the 2022 World Cup. The only way we can achieve that goal is by winning the Cup of Nations”, continued Victor Osimhen.

Nigeria is set to miss Bayer Leverkusen star striker Victor Boniface who will be out for six weeks due to a groin injury.

Leicester City’s midfielder Wilfred Ndidi withdrew from the squad due to an injury sustained at Leicester City a couple of weeks ago which is a big blow to Nigeria.

Taiwo Awoniyi is also missing the 2023 AFCON for the Super Eagles.

Nigeria is in Group A alongside the host, Ivory Coast, Guinea Bissau and Equatorial Guinea for the 2023 AFCON.
