Ghana’s national used vehicle standards, introduced by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), came into force on October 1, 2026.

They tightened the rules for anyone importing or dealing in vehicles through the country’s ports.

Under the new regime, a used vehicle is prohibited from import if it has been submerged in water or flood-damaged, burnt or fire-damaged, or damaged at the chassis or safety cage, whether broken, cracked, bent or twisted.

Vehicles assembled from spare parts, those without a speedometer reading in kilometres per hour, and those more than 15 years old are also barred.

Importers also face new pre-shipment requirements. Every used vehicle must be inspected in its country of origin by a GSA-approved third-party inspection body. It must also carry a Certificate of Conformance (CoC) confirming that it meets Ghana’s standards. Vehicles that fail to meet these requirements will be refused entry on arrival.

A grandfather clause offers some relief. Vehicles shipped before October 1, 2026 are not affected, even if they arrive after that date. Vehicles already in Ghana before the cut-off are also exempt.

The rules place new obligations on the trade as well. All vehicle importers and dealers, whether they handle new or used vehicles, must now register with the GSA Vehicle Homologation Unit, known as the GSA Auto Unit.

In effect, the standards turn what was once prudent advice into a legal requirement: verify the supplier, inspect the vehicle and check the documents. Compliant cargo is reportedly still clearing the Tema port without disruption.

Importers with vehicles currently in transit should confirm their shipping dates to determine whether they fall under the exemption.

Questions on specific shipments can be directed to the GSA Auto Unit at auto@gsa.gov.gh or by phone on 030 398 0177, 0256061634 or 0557088261.
