Ghanaian authorities on Wednesday morning arrested a woman identified as the former partner of Brigadier-General Amara Camara, Guinea’s Minister of State and Secretary-General of the Presidency, acting on an Interpol Red Notice request from Conakry.
The woman, Ms Bangoura, a Belgian citizen, was picked up at around 5 am while travelling into Ghana from Paris. She shares two children with General Camara.
According to Ms Bangoura, the notice against her followed a bitter breakup with the General, after which she threatened to expose secrets she says she is privy to.
She says she was forced to flee Guinea with her siblings, fearing for her life, and that she only learned afterwards that she had been placed on Interpol’s Red Notice list, a move she alleges was engineered to compel her return to Guinea rather than for any genuine criminal matter.
She has since informed Ghanaian authorities that her safety would be at risk if she were returned, and has indicated her intention to apply for political asylum in Ghana.
Law firm Merton & Everett LLP has been retained to represent her in the matter, confirmed by Lawyer Osagyefo Oliver Barker-Vormawor via his Facebook page.
Neither General Camara nor Guinean authorities had responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.
