Mohamed Salah is set to join Turkish side Trabzonspor as a free agent, with the Egyptian forward expected in Istanbul on Wednesday ahead of a move that would end his nine-year association with Liverpool.
Trabzonspor confirmed on their official channels that negotiations had begun for the transfer, and later announced Salah would land at Istanbul Atatürk Airport at midday before travelling on to Trabzon the same evening, where the club says details of a welcome programme will be shared with fans.
Reports from Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano and Turkish reporter Yağiz Sabuncuoğlu both point to a two-year contract, with Sabuncuoğlu citing an annual salary in the region of €17 million.
The move comes after Salah left Liverpool this summer following a decorated nine-season spell in which he scored 257 goals in 442 appearances, helping the club to the Premier League title twice, the Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
He remained a free agent through the close season. He was linked with several clubs, including a reported interest from MLS sides, before talks with Istanbul rivals Beşiktaş broke down over financial terms and image rights.
Trabzonspor have since emerged as the frontrunners for his signature, though club chairman Ertugrul Dogan had earlier cautioned that no agreement was yet final.
Should the transfer go through as expected, Salah would join a Trabzonspor side that finished third in the Turkish Süper Lig last season and won the Turkish Cup, securing a place in this season’s UEFA Europa League.
Official confirmation from Trabzonspor or Salah’s camp is still awaited, but Wednesday’s travel arrangements and welcome plans suggest a formal announcement is imminent.
