Ministry of Health sets up committee to investigate unrest in Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College

The Ministry of Health has constituted a seven-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the recent unrest at the Nursing Training College in Techiman-Krobo, Bono East Region.

The committee’s formation comes weeks after students of the college staged a demonstration demanding the removal of the school’s principal, Ellen Dwamena, over allegations of poor leadership and deteriorating conditions on campus, including inadequate lighting, poor sanitation and substandard feeding.

The protest, which saw students march more than four miles from Krobo to Techiman, led to clashes with police, the arrest of several students, and the eventual indefinite closure of the college by the Ministry on July 29, 2026.

In a press statement signed by Ministry spokesperson Tony Goodman, the Ministry named the following members to the investigative committee:

1. Prof. Vida Nyagre Yekong – Deputy Registrar of Health Facilities, Regulatory Authority, and former Dean of the School of Nursing, University for Development Studies (UDS)
2. Mr Ahmed Bennett Mumuni – Human Resource Manager, Bono East Regional Coordinating Council
3. Nana Asa Akon Panin – Techiman-Krobohene
4. Mrs Hepthzebah Gyimah – Deputy Director of Operations, representing the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
5. Mrs Isha Sena Iddrisu – Secretary to the Conference of Heads of Health Training Institutions
6. Nashiru-Deen Akparibo – President of the Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees’ Association (GNMTA)
7. Dr Inua Yussuf Issahaku Esq. – Director of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Health

Prof. Vida Nyagre Yekong will chair the committee.

According to the Ministry, the committee has been tasked with establishing the facts behind the disturbances, determining whether existing policies, codes of conduct and administrative procedures were complied with, and making recommendations to the Minister for Health for appropriate action.

The committee is expected to submit a comprehensive report to the Minister on or before August 11, 2026.

The move follows earlier interventions, including a monitoring visit by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the Ministry, aimed at assessing student welfare concerns and communication gaps between management and the student body — efforts that failed to fully restore calm before the college’s eventual shutdown.

The Ministry has assured students, parents and staff that every effort is being made to resolve the situation, with further updates on the college’s reopening to be communicated through official channels.
