Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for 30 days and fined €255 (£215) by the Portuguese Football Federation after walking out of the national team camp.

The federation’s disciplinary council described the punishment as “adequate and sufficient” for a serious infraction.

It said Ronaldo fully admitted the facts in a formal statement, and that this, together with his clean disciplinary record, helped reduce the sanction. The fine was the maximum the federation could impose once mitigating circumstances were taken into account.

The dispute began in late September, when Ronaldo, 41, was an unused substitute in Portugal’s win over Norway. He accused coach Jorge Jesus of breaking an agreement to play him and left the camp ahead of the Nations League game against Denmark.

Portugal went on to beat both Denmark and Norway without him and now top Group A4 with a perfect record from four matches.

Ronaldo later apologised publicly to his teammates and supporters, saying his departure had to have consequences and that his status as a role model meant he should be judged strictly. Jesus has said the door remains open to him.

The suspension began on October 1, the day of the Denmark game, so Ronaldo has already served 19 days.

He is expected to be available for Portugal’s next Nations League match, against Denmark on November 14. He has the right to appeal, but he had already said he expected to be punished and had not publicly reacted to the ruling at the time of publication.
