Mozambique nearly did the unthinkable at the Felix Hophouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan as Egypt drew 2-2 against Mozambique.
Egypt got off to a brilliant start with Mohammed Mostapha pouncing on a loose ball in the middle of Mozambique’s eighteen-yard box to shoot the ball to the right bottom corner in the second
minute of the game to give the Phoroahs an early lead. Egypt ended the first half with a comfortable lead.
Mozambique had a wonderful three minutes early in the second half between the 55th and 58th minutes as they shocked the Phoroahs by equalizing and taking the lead through Witi and Clesio Bauque. It was very exciting and shocking for football fans as the minnows, Mozambique, were leading one of the hottest favourites, Egypt.
Mozambique defended pretty well until Mostapha Mogammed went down under a challenge in the box and the referee waved away the appeals. A penalty was awarded after the referee consulted VAR and Mohammed Salah converted it in the 7th minute of the extra time to secure a lucky point for Egypt.
Egypt will play against Ghana in their second game while Mozambique and Cape Verde will lock horns at the Atadw Felix Houphouet-Boigny.
