Bafana Bafana started against Mali on a brighter note as South Africa had 5 shots on goal compared to Mali’s 3 in the first half.

Percy Tau missed a crucial penalty in the 18th minute after a VAR check by referee Mohammed Adel had given a spot kick for South Africa.

Lassine Sinayoko missed a glorious opportunity on the stroke of halftime after he ran with the ball towards the keeper and pulled a trigger but was saved by Ronwen Williams.

Momentum switched to Mali after Lassana Coulibaly replaced Yves Bissouma in the 58th minute.

Mali opened the scoring with skipper Hamari Traore rolling the ball into an empty net from close range after a rebound left South Africa goalkeeper Williams stranded.

Six minutes later, Lassine Sinayoko slotted the ball past Williams after receiving a delightful through ball from Kamory Doumbia.

Mali protected their 2-0 lead as Bafana Bafana couldn’t find the back of the net, hence losing 2-0.

Hugo Broos will rue Percy Tau’s 18th-minute missed penalty as it had a great effect on the scoreline.

On the other hand, Eric Chelle will be extremely delighted to kick off Mali’s campaign with an incredible 2-0 win over South Africa.
