Ghana skipper Andre Dede Ayew has made a very shocking comment ahead of the 2023 AFCON. Speaking to important personalities at the Golden Beam Hotel in Kumasi during the Black Stars’ dinner with the president of Ghana, the 33-year-old made a shocking comment to which many think he just wanted attention.

“Playing in the AFCON is more difficult than in the World Cup”, said Andre Dede Ayew who will make his 8th appearance at the prestigious AFCON. He has also played in 3 World Cups (2010, 2014, 2022) for Ghana and might therefore know the difference between the two.

There is nothing there to be compared between the AFCON and the FIFA World Cup as Africa has had just 1 appearance in the semi-finals of the FIFA World since its inception in 1930. The record was made by Morocco in the Qatar 2022 World Cup when the Atlas Lions defied all odds and eliminated Spain and Portugal en route to the semi-finals.

Compared to the other continents, Africa will be ranked the 4th or 5th best in the World Cup as Asia even reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2002 when South Korea led by Guus Hiddink defied every odd and reached the last 4.

Europe and South America have been the dominant force as they have shared the World Cup trophy since 1930.

Andre Ayew’s comment will generate a lot of controversies as many think the African continent has disappointed on the World stage.

AFCON 2023 will kick off on Saturday in Abidjan with an opening game between the host, La Cote d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea.

Ghana is placed in Group B alongside Egypt, Mozambique and Cape Verde.
