Nigerian superstar Osimhen won the CAF award on Monday for the best footballer in 2023 after great performances for club and country.
Osimhen saw off competition from Morocco full-back Achraf Hakimi and Egypt striker Mohammed Salah to land African football’s biggest individual award.
The Napoli star striker won the prestigious award after firing his club to its first Serie A title in over three decades.
En route to the Serie A title, Osimhen scored 26 goals and provided four assists as he became the first African to win the top scorer in the Italian Serie A. <span;>In doing so, the 24-year-old became the first Napoli player to finish top scorer in Italian football since Diego Maradona in 1987/88.
Victor Osimhen scored 10 goals for Nigeria to finish as the top scorer in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers. He won Serie A’s Best Striker for the 2022-23 season and finished 8th in the Balon d’Or.
Osimhen became the first Nigerian winner of the men’s award since Kanu Nwankwo in 1999 after another prolific campaign.
His goals pushed Napoli to their first Serie A crown since the days of Maradona – a triumph few predicted last summer.
Victor Osimhen deserves the winner of the award considering his performance for club and country albeit he missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
